News from The Tree House CAC -  April 2018

Child Abuse Prevention Month is Nearly Over,
but the Work Continues all Year

April is Child Abuse Prevention month, a time to highlight the work done to prevent child abuse and help heal those affected by it. Some of you have stopped by The Tree House for a tour or had us out to speak to your organizations, but we realize that many of you do not really understand what a child advocacy center (CAC) is and why it is so important to a child who has been abused.

Before CACs were developed, abused children had to navigate through a complicated maze of services, often having to go from place to place repeating their traumatic stories over and over again to the police, doctors, lawyers, therapists, and others. With the advent of CACs this process became much more coordinated and child-centered. At the CAC, children tell their stories once to a specially trained interviewer. A team that includes law enforcement; child protective services; mental health and medical professionals; prosecution; and victim advocates decide together how to best help the children based on the interviews.

To learn more, watch the video below put out by the National Children's Alliance, through whom The Tree House CAC is accredited. If you cannot see a video below, click here to see the newsletter online.

The Tree House Child Advocacy Center is Montgomery County, Maryland's ONLY child advocacy center.

Be a social fundraiser

Throughout April and into the first week of May we are encouraging our supporters to set up Tree House Tour de Cookie social fundraising pages. All the money raised will go toward funding the free services we offer children who come to us to heal from their abuse.
