News from The Tree House CAC - October 2017
"Remodeling" the Tree House
Twenty years ago, when a child-centered approach for victims of sexual abuse was a new idea, Montgomery County was among the first to create a Child Advocacy Center. It began in concert with the Primary Care Coalition of Montgomery County, who agreed to serve as the non-profit partner for the start-up, The Tree House CAC, for ‘a little while.'
Although it’s taken us a bit longer than ‘a little while,’ on October 1, 2017 a new non-profit, The Tree House Child Advocacy Center of Montgomery County MD, Inc, assumed the role of dedicated non-profit partner for The Tree House CAC. Along with Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, the new non-profit will ensure The Tree House CAC will continue to provide hope and healing for victims of abuse.
What does this mean for the families we serve? The community will see no difference in the program and the services provided by The Tree House. It is a seamless transition, and everyone who comes to The Tree House will continue to receive the quality, compassionate care and services they need to recover from traumatic abuse. Our medical care, forensic services, trauma-focused therapy and victim assistance will continue to be available exactly as before the transition.
What does it mean for you and your community? Increased opportunities to be involved. Our board members are from your neighborhoods, and they are passionate about helping child abuse victims. In the near future we will be growing our board of directors, giving others the chance to get involved and help serve the mission of The Tree House.
What does it mean for The Tree House CAC? We are now eligible to seek more grants and expand fundraising efforts as a small dedicated non-profit. This will allow us to expand our education and prevention efforts, as well as continue to increase our professional staff, innovate, and support new service approaches, such as our Transitional Trauma Therapy for children entering foster care. We will use donations to The Tree House with great care because it is our responsibility to do so.
This "remodel" is much more than a new coat of paint. It’s a move to community ownership of a community problem and an opportunity for Montgomery County to build one of the finest Child Advocacy Centers in the country. We believe that together we are up for that challenge!
Staff Spotlight: An Ongoing Series
Prior to joining The Tree House CAC, Yancy worked for nearly 11 years in various human service positions within non-profit agencies. Much of her employment experience has been in direct service, specifically providing mental health services within community health centers. The focus of her professional career centers on social justice, reducing language barriers and disparities in the access to trauma based mental health services, and providing evidence-based trauma-focused interventions for vulnerable and oppressed populations, such as children, women, and families. Yancy has over 11 years of experience working with children and families. Currently, she is working as a Bilingual therapist in the Transitional Trauma Therapy program (T3) - a partnership between Montgomery County Child Welfare Services and The Tree House CAC. Yancy provides evidence-based trauma-informed treatment and services to children in the process of being placed in foster care. Her commitment to the field of working with vulnerable children is not only long standing, but her focus on lessening the trauma of children and families during placement has further strengthened her passion for the work she does.
When asked why she decided to work at The Tree House she replied, "Who wouldn't want to work with children?! It's not "work" for me when the organization's mission and vision is much in line with my values and strong belief!"
